DESCRIPTION:The Northern Virginia Community College is offering an "August Summer Sampler" of one-time classes on Thursday\, August 6 from distinguished NOVA faculty on engaging and popular subjects through Zoom. Participants will have the opportunity to sample a typical NOVA class\, get to know NOVA faculty members\, and ask questions afterwards.\n\n \n\nYou can register at https://vccs.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0odOChqjgrHdKBigCWkiiQaiZGk8DSoh7C and contact summersampler@nvcc.edu if you have any questions. Note that these sample classes are not for college credit. The line-up is as follows:\n\n \n\nThe Expansion of a Southern Slave Country   11:00 a.m.\n\nJoin Professor Alicia Tucker as she discusses the development of a Southern culture\, the dimensions of nineteenth century slavery\, and the growth of the domestic slave trade while making connections between the past and today. Professor Tucker teaches history at NOVA's Manassas Campus and holds a master's degree in Early American History.\n\n \n\nSpecies Interactions   12:00 p.m.\n\nDr. Shabana Meyering will describe the various ways by which species interact with each other\, including feeding relationships that give rise to food webs\, and how you can identify some indicator species in a natural environment near you. Dr. Meyering teaches biology and environmental science at NOVA's Woodbridge Campus and holds a doctoral degree in Biochemistry.\n\n \n\nA Life Well Lived - How Human Development Shapes Happiness"   1:00 p.m.\n\nJoin Dr. Christopher Hafen as he discusses theories that help us understand how to live a healthy and happy life. Learn how common human experiences shape our perspective and how connection to others\, autonomy\, and competence all play a key role in the human condition. Dr. Hafen teaches psychology at NOVA's Manassas Campus and holds a doctoral degree in Developmental Psychology.
