3rd Annual Veterans Picnic
Veterans and their families and citizens dedicated to serving veterans are invited to the Third Annual Veterans Picnic on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013 at Cherry Hill Park in Falls Church.
Festivities begin at noon and last until 4 pm as participants enjoy traditional BBQ picnic foods generously provided and prepared by the staff at Bentley’s Restaurant. Students from area schools will provide musical entertainment.
A remembrance ceremony will be held honoring Tony Scerbo, who recently passed away at age 96. He served as Chairman Emeritus of the POW/MIA Committees for the Council and for The American Legion. He provided the leadership to name the American Legion bridge.
A keynote speaker from the Japanese-American Veterans Association briefly will share military experiences. Local citizens will be honored for their efforts to serve our veterans.
Roger Neighborgall, former military Ranger, will be honored with the “Lifetime Achievement Award” recognizing his many years of service on behalf of our local veterans. He is also a tireless educator with local boy scouts teaching them about patriotism and civic responsibility.
John Johnson, a long-time local activist on behalf of veteran programs, will receive the “Veteran of The Year” award. He is the Past Commander of the Falls Church American Legion Post 130 and has devoted decades working on projects designed to care for our veterans and their families.
Robert and Emily Winterbottom, who lost their son in the Iraq conflict in 2007, will share the “Veteran’s Best Friend” award, thanking them for their active fundraising efforts to support Falls Church veteran programs, including raising funds to pay for a bronze plaque honoring the Falls Church heroes of the recent wars.
