There’s more to abstraction than throwing paint around. Like representational art, abstraction is built on a foundation of strong composition, the importance of value modulation, and extensive color knowledge. There’s also the important factor of what unique proposition each individual artist brings to the work. The instructor will walk you through these important steps to immediately improve your paintings. In this class, you’ll be able to experiment through a series of exercises, work large, and explore your artist voice as you work on one abstract painting.
*The instructor encourages acrylics, but oils are acceptable as long as students have prior experience with them.
Please note: Students must have completed vaccination for Covid-19. Falls Church Arts follows the current guidelines for masking, which are updated as needed.
Bryan Jernigan
Bryan Jernigan is a national award-winning and an internationally collected abstract artist working in acrylic and oils. Most of his work falls into the non-objective category, but abstraction falls on a sliding scale from semi-abstract to non-objective, and Jernigan has worked in every abstract genre. His most recent project includes painting five oversized abstracts to be sited in a new building overlooking the Potomac River in Alexandria. The pieces range in size from 5 feet by 6 feet to 6 feet by 10 feet.
