Falls Church Declares October 18 as Repair Day

On September 8, the Falls Church City Council officially proclaimed October 18, 2025, as International Repair Day, recognising the power of repair to build community, reduce waste, and strengthen sustainability efforts in The Little City.

The proclamation, proposed by The Learning Quest, highlights the vital role of repair in countering planned obsolescence, extending the life of everyday items, and promoting a circular economy. It also celebrates the city’s strong legacy of reuse and repair, from the Recycling Extravaganza and The Toy Nest Library to the decades-long service of Brown’s Hardware.

By declaring Repair Day, Falls Church is reaffirming its 2040 Vision of environmental sustainability, resource conservation, and community engagement. Mayor Letty Hardi signed the proclamation, encouraging residents to explore their ability to repair and recycle rather than replace, and to share repair knowledge with one another to enrich the environment, economy, and quality of life.

At the proclamation ceremony, representatives from Repair Café Fairfax and The Finishing School joined City Council members in celebrating the milestone. Their work—together with local initiatives such as The Learning Quest’s tool donation drives and Fix-It Clinics—shows that Falls Church is already leading the way in building a repair culture in Northern Virginia.

As we look toward October 18 and beyond, The Learning Quest invites the community to keep the spirit of Repair Day alive: bring your broken items, share your skills, and join us in creating a future where nothing is wasted and everything is valued.
